SUSTAINED WEIGHT LOSS

What Makes This Program Unique:

STOPS CRAVINGS: Eliminates or significantly lessens food cravings for foods like candy, chocolate, French Fries, bread, pasta and others by strengthening inhibitions to these problem foods.

RAPID FULLNESS: Restores fullness feedback mechanism. Satiation or feelings of fullness is achieved with a significantly lower intake of food, while lessening feelings of deprivation related to consuming less calories

SUSTAINED WEIGHT LOSS: Sustained weight loss is much more likely as clients experience long term inhibitions to problem foods and rapid feelings of fullness.

What People Are Saying

My total weight loss is twenty-eight pounds. Your program was easy to follow. I believe that anyone that wants to lose excess weight can achieve their goals through this program. Not eating all the fatty foods was the secret in my case. Before working with you, I tended to eat more at each meal and I over indulged in chips, French fries, cheese, and hamburgers Now, I am aware of portion size and manage the amount and eat more effectively. I’ve tried losing weight in the past but have not been able to sustain it. I believe this program made the difference in being able to maintain my best weight. Carlos Becerra

I have experienced results previously impossible to achieve. First, to date I have lost thirty five pounds. This in itself is not such an amazing accomplishment given that many programs out there could realize such results in the same allotted time. What is incredible is how easy I have been able to accomplish this. Your program has provided me with a new outlook on my eating habits, and changes in those habits have been affected without any outward work or effort on my part. These changes in how and what I eat seem to be natural and second nature. My wife noticed them right away. I don’t eat as fast. I don’t eat as much, and I don’t eat foods which I have determined are not good for me. Craig Polisky

Dr. Schoen’s unique weight loss program has helped me lose the last stubborn pounds I needed to reach my ideal weight. As an active, healthy woman, losing pounds has always been a difficult challenge. With Dr. Schoen’s program I learned to curb my addiction to French Fries, M&M Peanuts and other unhealthy snacks. In just a few short months I noticed my body feeling full during meals and resistant to mindless eating. In addition, when I was under stress at work I would find myself eating a large amount of M&M Peanuts every afternoon. I recommend this program to anyone who can’t get there on their own.   I am losing weight effortlessly and it's unbelievable to me, after all these years of dieting, and obsessing about excess pounds! Food is now the nourishment I need, but not the constant "I want, I want" that was always my down-side, especially in the evenings. When I feel the urge to eat, I ask myself if I'm really hungry and the answer is almost always "no, not now.” The program’s visualizations help me so much. I fill up much quicker than I used to and stay full for longer periods. I'm grateful that I'm content with my healthy foods and have no desire to overeat or nosh on my unhealthy foods. Thanks again. About six months ago my doctor told me to I needed to lose 15 pounds. He recommended Dr. Marc Schoen who works through UCLA and helps people with weight loss. I thought why not. Over the years I had tried everything else from diet pills to food programs. I met with Dr. Schoen and a few other people in a small group. His method included talking about what foods get me into trouble and how to stop eating them or at least cutting back on them. He works with a CD which is used at bedtime. I found myself eating less. I stopped having alcohol (which my doctor wanted me to do). I started to avoid the things that I overate with like nuts and crackers. I could go out with friends and be perfectly comfortable eating the new way I was learning rather than doing what I had done in the past which was overeating. With Dr. Schoen's method there is no diet and no food lists. It's a new way of thinking about eating. I enjoyed the Holidays without alcohol and overeating. I ate what I wanted to but less. I was well satisfied. When the holidays were over I not only didn’t gain weight, but I actually had lost one pound. I was feeling great about myself and feeling thinner going forward into the new year knowing that I had found the way to lose weight in which I could eat what I wanted but less and feel fine about it. TREATMENT PROTOCOL

The Sustained Weight Loss treatment protocol consists of a very powerful form of conditioning and a complex delivery of hypnotic eating suggestions. Treatment frequency is once every three weeks. Outside of these treatments, the client listens to a Hypnosis CD in tandem with a sniff of Eucalyptus at bedtime for the purposes of reinforcing the conditioning and hypnotic suggestions. After approximately three to four months, the treatment effect is generally self-sustaining and typically no other treatment is necessary.

Weight loss runs ½ to 2 pounds per week. Men typically lose faster than women, and if patients are willing to exercise even mildly their results are improved. No specific eating plan is required. But clients are encouraged to find one that they believe fits them the best. The Sustained Weight Loss model makes it much easier for patients to adhere to the eating plan they select. As the program unfolds, clients find it increasingly easy to resist problematic foods, and develop a sense of fullness much sooner than usual. Further, they notice they do not feel deprived or restricted while losing weight. In fact, many patients report that the process is easy and fun. Most importantly, they maintain their weight loss relatively easy (within 3 to 5 pounds) over an extended period.

TREATMENT RATIONAL

Traditional weight loss programs have historically relied on altering beliefs and attitudes toward food and eating. The goal of these interventions is to convince the conscious mind that it is not hungry. But unfortunately, much of our problematic eating is affected by three core components: our conditioning, cravings, and our food impulses, areas that have been overlooked in weight loss treatment. In other words, we can tell ourselves we do not want ice cream, but since we have years of experience to the contrary, other parts of the mind and body continue to crave it. Our conditioning, food impulses, and cravings for food often lead to unconscious or automatic eating, as well as, eating when we are bored, excited, fatigued, sad, or happy. A recent study by Wang et al (2009) found that women, who were attempting to suppress their hunger responses consciously, were unable to inhibit the part of the brain responsible for hunger. So despite telling themselves they were not hungry, their brains continued to register the hunger response.

These cravings, impulses, and early conditioning can often undo our best efforts to control them. They underlie the addictive nature of eating, and it is these more primary and reflex responses toward food that often lead to diets failing. Yet, weight loss programs typically do not address these core elements and seldom attempt to recondition them. Instead, dieters are told to lecture and reason with these basic impulses rather than deal with them directly. Yet our ability to sustain and change these core elements holds the key to long term weight loss. A recent study conducted at Brown University (Bond et al, 2008) recently confirmed this assertion. This investigation and others have found that maintaining weight loss long term is directly related to sustaining our inhibitions to eating problematic foods. By changing our programmed reaction to food we are able to successfully boost our inhibitions to the foods that are leading to weight gain.

A significant obstacle facing overeaters is their tendency to overlook physical cues of fullness or satiation. Levin (2007) at New Jersey Medical School has found that overeaters become insensitive to rising Leptin levels in the body which signal satiation. Overeaters tend to ignore the cues that healthy eaters pay attention to that indicates satiation. The result is that the Mind Body’s feedback system designed to stop overeating stops working. Once this feedback system stops, individuals become accustomed to eating much larger quantities of food.

Since traditional weight loss plans emphasize eating smaller portions, most dieters experience substantial feelings of deprivation since they had become accustomed to eating larger quantities. Yet dieters are encouraged to not only avoid problematic foods, but are expected to be satisfied with eating less. Dieters are typically instructed to ignore these hunger pangs, but from the research on inhibitions, it is evident that the brain and body continue to feel hungry and deprived. Deprivation and the desire to avoid it, often sabotage the best of intentions to maintain reasonable food portions.

With the help of Sustained Weight Loss it becomes possible to directly change programmed food impulses and cravings, thereby limiting the experience of deprivation.

Food Cravings and Food Impulses

Sustained Weight Loss alters food cravings by boosting inhibitions to problematic foods. It starts by taking foods that are problematic for clients, (such as chocolate, cookies, cakes, bread, pasta, French Fries, ice cream, etc). By reconditioning the client’s programmed or conditioned response to these problematic foods, these foods lose their uncontrollable appeal. Once these foods lose their compelling appeal, they lose their power to control the individual, making it far easier to eat reasonable portions and sustain healthy eating habits.

The Sustained Weight Loss Program restores the deactivated Mind – Body feedback system. Physical cues related to satiation become much more pronounced and obvious. In this way, smaller quantities of food result in greater feelings of fullness. The result is that clients feel full sooner and eat significantly less food. Further, since they feel full, they no longer experience food deprivation or hunger pangs.
